Chip at the Podium

Chip Beeker and his wife, Teresa, were raised in Greene County, and have roots there dating back to the early 1800’s. Chip’s father, a retired postman, and mother raised Chip, along with two brothers and two sisters, to love God, family, and country. Chip also believes in hard work. Chip’s strong work ethic was born at an early age while working on his grandfather’s farm. Chip’s first job in town was working at a Eutaw grocery store. He had to stand on a crate to sack the customer’s groceries.

Chip graduated from Greene County High where he and Teresa Inge were high school sweethearts. While in school, Chip played football, basketball, and baseball. He earned a scholarship to attend Livingston University. He graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, Chip worked construction at Mobile and Walker County steam plants.

Chip and Teresa married in 1972. Teresa worked as an elementary school teacher in Eutaw and Walker County. During this time, Chip became interested in farming. He started his own farm and continues to own and operate a cattle and catfish farm today. He also started a timber management and harvesting operation which grew into one of the largest in the area.

Chip and Teresa have three children: Diana, Inge, and Chris. They attended Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Their children have given them eight wonderful grandchildren.

Chip was elected to the Greene County Commission in 1986. He served as Assistant Chairman from 1986 to 1996 and Chairman from 1997 to 2006. During his tenure, a courthouse, jail, physician’s clinic, Head Start building, and health department were built in the county. Chip was instrumental in attracting several new industries to Greene County. Chip also supervised the improvement of Greene County’s sewer system and helped secure a $10 million grant to extend water service throughout the county. Under Chip’s leadership, Greene County overcame a history of fraud, corruption, and inefficiency that plagued county government.

Chip began his political career as a Democrat and switched to the Republican Party in 1997. He was the first Republican to be elected in Greene County since Reconstruction, and he is the only Republican since. While on the Commission, Chip served as the State Chairman of the Alabama Public Works and Rural Transportation Steering Committee.

For many years, Chip has been an Elder and Sunday school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Eutaw. Over the years, he has coached Little League and Varsity baseball and Junior High basketball. Chip was a member of the National Guard for eight years. He is an avid golfer and has won several club championships. Chip is a proven businessman and leader with a perfect balance of qualifications.
